Gamma Honors Society Recognizes High-Achieving Students

By Julia Dunn on May 12, 2017

College students work incredibly hard — they put hours of effort into their classes and practice meticulous time management, allowing them to garner 4.0 GPAs while working multiple jobs or holding leadership positions in co-curricular activities on campus.

They review flashcards, read countless books and write critically about what they read. Unfortunately, many of these students’ efforts often go unnoticed, aside from the marks looking great on a transcript or on a commencement program shout out. As of recently, a new international honors society, Gamma Honors, aims to further recognize “academic excellence and, importantly, the hard work, determination, discipline, and strength of character that goes into it.”

The Gamma Honors society is reserved only for students who graduate with honors, and it isn’t just for undergraduates! Gamma Honors offers membership in five categories:  Doctorate, Master’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, Associate’s Degree, and High School Diploma/Certificate, making the society more inclusive to those with varying levels of education.

To join the society, a school official must verify that the student applicant did, in fact, graduate with honors.

This honors society represents a greater step in honoring the work that students do to pursue education. According to a recent press release, joining Gamma Honors comes with benefits beyond the lifetime membership alone, including verification [of honors] for prospective employers, special product and services discounts, and inclusion by category of membership in the publication Best in Academics among Graduates. Members will also benefit from continued exposure and visibility provided by their association with Gamma Honors. Additionally, students will be granted a membership certificate that commemorates their success.

Through registering more and more high-achieving students in the honors society, Gamma Honors aims to increase the visibility of these scholars with the intention of encouraging other young people to pursue higher education. Given the extensive boundaries that marginalized or underrepresented students face in getting an education, it is important for students to see reflections of themselves in academia — this can make an enormous difference especially for students entering universities or other schools that lack in diversity.

With the creation of Gamma Honors comes hope for more widespread recognition of high-achieving students. In showcasing and honoring students for their noteworthy accomplishments, we can construct a culture that values and supports students after graduation day.
